Sonographical diagnosis and assessment of Oesophagostomum bifurcum induced colonic pathology: intra- and inter-observer variation studies

ثبت نشده
چکیده

To estimate the reliability of ultrasound for the detection of colonic wall pathology induced by the intestinal parasitic helminth O. bifurcum, three studies to assess the intraand inter-observer variation of the technique were performed. In the endemic area of northern Ghana, 181 people from a low prevalence village and 62 people from a high prevalence village were examined twice by the same observer, and 111 people were independently investigated by two observers in a moderately endemic village. Kappa for the prevalence observations in the three studies were 0.82, 0.87 and 0.81 respectively, and kappa for the intensity observations were 0.66, 0.63 and 0.71 respectively. The upper 95% confidence intervals of the average absolute difference in nodule size measurements in studies 1 and 3 were 3.6 mm and 4.5 mm. Ultrasound has a promising future for the diagnosis and management of O. bifurcum colonic pathology.

Natural progression of Oesophagostomum bifurcum pathology and infection in a rural community of northern Ghana.

An estimated 250,000 people in northern Ghana and Togo are infected with the intestinal helminth parasite Oesophagostomum bifurcum, as detected by stool cultures. Clinical disease caused by O. bifurcum is responsible for about 50 cases per year at the region's central hospital, and presents as painful abdominal masses: inflammatory colonic nodules containing live juvenile stages of the helminth...

The effect of albendazole on Oesophagostomum bifurcum infection and pathology in children from rural northern Ghana.

Ultrasonography has already revealed that up to 50% of individuals in some villages in northern Ghana have colonic pathology induced by Oesophagostomum bifurcum. Approximately 2% of those affected progress to clinical oesophagostomiasis if left untreated. In the present study, ultrasound-positive children living in a heavily infected community were each given 5 days of treatment with albendazol...

High resolution DNA fingerprinting by AFLP to study the genetic variation among Oesophagostomum bifurcum (Nematoda) from human and non-human primates from Ghana.

An AFLP approach was established to investigate genetic diversity within Oesophagostomum bifurcum (order Strongylida) from human and non-human primates. Evaluation of different combinations of restriction enzymes (n = 8) and primers (n = 29) demonstrated that the use of HindIII/BglII digested templates and primers with the selective nucleotides + AG/ +AC, respectively, was the most effective fo...

Diagnosis of Oesophagostomum bifurcum and hookworm infection in humans: day-to-day and within-specimen variation of larval counts.

Oesophagostomum bifurcum, as well as hookworm infections are hyperendemic among humans in northern Togo and Ghana. For parasite-specific diagnosis a coproculture is obligatory, because only the infective larvae, and not the eggs, can be distinguished morphologically. The sensitivity of duplicate coprocultures from a single stool sample was found to be above 90% in comparison to a gold standard ...

Inter-observer agreement between 2-dimensional CT versus 3-dimensional I-Space model in the Diagnosis of Occult Scaphoid Fractures

Background: The I-Space is a radiological imaging system in which Computed Tomography (CT)-scans can be evaluated as a three dimensional hologram. The aim of this study is to analyze the value of virtual reality (I-Space) in diagnosing acute occult scaphoid fractures.   Methods: A convenient cohort of 24 patients with a CT-scan from prior studies, without a scaphoid fracture on radiograph, ye...
